The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in neonates with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia: A 26-year experience from a tertiary centre

European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Sep 16, 2017

Vaja R, et al. - Authors in this article present their 26-year experience regarding the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in neonates with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Thye suggested giving the option of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to these neonates if clinically indicated. Provided these patients survive the initial postoperative period, they go on to have a sustained survival benefit. They suggested considering long-term cost analysis and morbidity to determine the true effect of ECMO on congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
