The trajectory of C-reactive protein serum levels in older hip fracture patients with postoperative delirium

International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry May 10, 2019

Slor CJ, et al. - Given that a systemic inflammatory response accompanies the important precipitating risk factors for delirium such as infections, vascular disorders and surgery, researchers sought for the trajectory of systemic inflammatory markers and their role in the development and outcome of delirium. In this prospective cohort study of 121 older patients undergoing acute surgery for hip fracture, 41 patients developed postoperative delirium. Results of the study support an association of delirium with an increased systemic inflammatory response. Using the Generalised Estimating Equations method (GEE), they identified an association of higher C-reactive protein (CRP) levels with postoperative delirium in longitudinal analysis of the trajectory of serum CRP levels. Patients with short (1-2 days) and more prolonged delirium (≥3 days) showed no significant differences in serum CRP levels.
