The status of hepatitis C virus infection among people who inject drugs in the Middle East and North Africa

Addiction Feb 06, 2020

Mahmud S, Mumtaz GR, Chemaitelly H, et al. - Via synthesizing data on the standardized and systematically assembled databases of the MENA HCV Epidemiology Synthesis Project (1989–2018), researchers determined the epidemiology of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) people who inject drugs (PWID). They evaluated 118 HCV antibody prevalence measures and identified the pooled mean prevalence of 49.3% among PWID for all MENA. They noted the presence of HCV infection in nearly half of this population of PWID. However, countries exhibit large variations in antibody prevalence; the country-specific pooled mean varied from 21.7% in Tunisia to 94.2% in Libya. In addition to > 200,000 chronically infected current PWID, there exists an unknown number of people i who no longer inject drugs and may have acquired HIV during past injecting drug use. The researchers recommended expanding harm reduction services and employing innovative strategies to ensure accessibility to HCV testing and treatment.
