The prognostic value of serum amyloid A for long-term mortality among patients with subclinical carotid atherosclerosis
European Journal of Clinical Investigation Mar 03, 2019
Mayer FJ, et al. - In patients with subclinical carotid artery disease, researchers ascertained if serum amyloid A (SAA) is correlated with long-term mortality. For cause-specific mortality, 1,065 patients with neurological asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis were evaluated via duplex sonography and were prospectively followed. A total of 549 deaths were recorded during a median of 11.8 years, including 362 cardiovascular deaths. Compared with patients who survived, those who died within the follow-up period had significantly higher baseline SAA serum levels. In patients with subclinical carotid atherosclerosis, serum amyloid A was not independently related to (cardiovascular) mortality.
