The prognostic value of routine coagulation tests for patients with heat stroke

The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Apr 26, 2020

Xing L, Liu SY, Mao HD, et al. - Researchers investigated whether routine coagulation tests are valuable for inferring prognosis in patients with heat stroke. In this multi-center retrospective study, patients arriving at the hospital < 24 h after the onset of Heat Stroke (HS) were assessed for the routine coagulation variables, including the lowest platelet count. Sixty-day mortality rate of 20.9% was reported. The non-surviving patients had significantly higher median Prothrombin Time–International Normalized Ratio (PT-INR) and significantly higher median Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) than the survivors. Findings suggest independent prognostic value of a prolonged APTT and elevated PT-INR within 24 h for 60-day mortality in HS.
