The prevalence of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults, an exploration of differences between studies and within definitions: A systematic review and meta-analyses

Age and Aging Jul 29, 2018

Mayhew AJ, et al. - Via conducting a systematic review, researchers summarised the definitions of sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults. Further, based on these definitions, they explored similarities and differences in prevalence estimates. Analyzing 109 included articles they identified eight definitions of sarcopenia. The European Working Group on Sarcopenia/Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia, International Working Group on Sarcopenia and Foundation for the National Institutes of Health definitions displayed the lowest pooled prevalence estimates. The appendicular lean mass (ALM)/weight, ALM/height, ALM regressed on height and weight and ALM / body mass index definitions showed the highest prevalence estimates. Depending on the definition used, estimates of sarcopenia prevalence varied from 9.9 to 40.4%. Populations significantly differed in prevalence within definitions. This suggests the necessity for better understanding this lack of agreement between definitions before sarcopenia can be appropriately used in a clinical context.
