The prevalence of retinopathy in patients with type 1 diabetes treated with education-based intensified insulin therapy and its association with parameters of glucose control
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jan 29, 2019
Hatz K, et al. - Researchers analyzed the prevalence of retinopathy (DR) in type 1 diabetes patients treated with education-based intensified insulin therapy (EBIIT), and evaluated its association with glucose control parameters. Study participants included 151 patients with a mean diabetes duration of 14.3 years. Eyes were examined using standardized 7 field ETDRS settings, and images were evaluated by a professional external reading center. According to results, the median of individual mean HbA1c was 7.3% and the median HbA1c years was 16.8. EBIIT was correlated with good diabetes control and a low prevalence of DR in type 1 diabetes. The best predictor for development of DR was the cumulative glucose exposure over time given as HbA1c years.
