The prevalence of depression and the association between depression and kidney function and health-related quality of life in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease: A multicenter cross-sectional study

Clinical Interventions in Aging Jun 02, 2019

Wang WL, et al. - Via a cross-sectional analysis of 1,079 elderly participants from China with chronic kidney disease (CKD), researchers assessed depression prevalence and the link between depression and kidney function and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Using the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale and the Kidney Disease Quality of Life-36 instrument, depression and HRQOL were assessed, respectively. In CKD patients, the identified independent and significant predictors of depression included marital status, education level, history of cardiovascular diseae and diabetes, CKD stage, and proteinuria. A high prevalence of depression (23.0%) was reported among elderly patients with CKD. Depression prevalence suggested a negative correlation with kidney function. Thus, a major negative impact of depression on HRQOL was supported in this study.
