The negative impact of maternal perinatal opioid use on neonatal outcomes
The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry Jun 17, 2021
Gandhi KD, Schak KM, Voort JLV, et al. - Researchers performed comparison of newborns of opioid-using and nonopioid drug–using mothers with those of control mothers who did not report substance use with respect to their outcomes. They identified 328 infants diagnosed with drug withdrawal syndrome (168 were born with opioid neonatal abstinence syndrome and 160 with a nonopioid withdrawal syndrome) from January 2010 through June 2017 using the Rochester Epidemiology Project. Analysis suggests correlation of prenatal opioid use with a substantial risk for prematurity. Perinatal complications are more frequently encountered in newborns diagnosed with neonatal abstinence syndrome. In addition, mothers using opioids during pregnancy are likely to use other substances.
