The mediating role of impulsivity between psychological distress and alcohol misuse among college students at a historically Black university
Journal of Dual Diagnosis Apr 26, 2019
Risi MM, et al. - Researchers assessed 287 undergraduate students attending historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) in the southern US (Mage = 22.5, 66.3% female, 93.7% black), to assess how impulsivity influences the relationship between psychological distress and alcohol misuse using structural equation modeling. Findings revealed a significant mediatory role of impulsivity in the relationship between psychological distress and alcohol misuse. Association of greater levels of psychological distress with higher impulsivity was noted, which was linked to increased alcohol misuse. As per further analyses, the association of psychological distress to alcohol misuse seemed significantly mediated by attentional impulsivity. Interventions aimed at preventing and reducing alcohol misuse should target impulsivity among college students attending HBCUs who experience psychological distress.
