Journal of Viral Hepatitis Mar 29, 2019
Lombardi A, et al. - In order to assess if men who have sex with men (MSM) status or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection influence hepatitis A infection, researchers evaluated demographics data, risk factors, comorbidities and laboratory results of all the hospitalized cases of hepatitis A referred to two tertiary centers in Northern Italy in 2017 alongside performing a retrospective analysis of the electronic records of the 2009-2016 period (pre-2017). In 2017, they identified 117 cases overall:107 (91%) were male, 78 reported themselves as MSM (66%) and 17 (14.5%) were infected by HIV. They identified reports of 48 cases for the pre-2017 period: 29 (60%) were male and 3 (6.2%) were infected by HIV. Observations revealed no influence of MSM status and HIV infection on the clinical course or the severity of hepatitis A.
