The impact of frequent cystoscopy on surgical care and cancer outcomes among patients with low-risk, non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer

Cancer May 30, 2019

Schroeck FR, et al. - Given that limited evidence forms the basis of surveillance recommendations for patients with low-risk, non–muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), researchers performed this retrospective cohort study to evaluate results following frequent vs recommended cystoscopic surveillance. Participants were patients from the Department of Veterans Affairs who received the diagnosis of low-risk NMIBC from 2005 to 2011 and were followed-up through 2014. Overall there were 1,042 participants and having more frequent cystoscopy than recommended was reported in 798 (77%) of them. Findings revealed the association of frequent cystoscopy with twice as many transurethral resections. Also, no reduction in the risk of bladder cancer progression or mortality was evident in relation to frequent cystoscopy; these findings support current guidelines.
