The higher prevalence of truncal obesity and diabetes in American than Chinese patients with chronic hepatitis C might contribute to more rapid progression to advanced liver disease

H. Rao, et al. – Researchers carried out this study to compare the clinical characteristics of hepatitis C patients in the United States (US) and China, and factors influencing disease stage. Compared with those in China, hepatitis C virus (HCV) patients in the US had the more advanced liver disease. They speculated that underlying fatty liver disease could be a major contributor to this difference. Management of glycometabolic abnormalities had to occur in parallel with anti–viral therapy to achieve optimal outcomes.
