The efficacy of cotton ball packing after endoscopic sinus surgery: A prospective, randomized, controlled trial
Auris Nasus Larynx Feb 21, 2019
Kim SL, et al. - In this study, researchers estimated 39 candidates to analyze the effectiveness of cotton ball packing in subjects following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). The candidates were directed to perform nasal saline irrigation and administer a nasal spray in each nostril and then told to put a cotton ball in one side of the nostril whereas the other side was kept to be empty as a control. They noticed less discomfort for postnasal drip, rhinorrhea, headache, and facial pain as compared to no packing. They recommended the use of the cotton ball packing after ESS because of significantly fewer crusts formation and adhesions. They also observed a reduction in pain and time during postoperative debridement and supporting faster wound healing.
