The efficacy of antioxidants in sperm parameters and production of reactive oxygen species levels during the freeze-thaw process: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Andrologia | Jan 26, 2020
Bahmyari R, et al. - A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed to evaluate the effect of antioxidants in sperm parameters and reduction in reactive oxygen species production during the freeze-thaw process. They systematically searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase and Cochrane central library. They selected 23 studies out of the 1,583 articles for data extraction. The data indicated that antioxidants increased sperm progressive motility and viability and decreased sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, but no significant improvement was noted in total sperm motility after thawing. Overall, the outcomes showed the positive effect of antioxidants on progressive sperm motility, viability and reduction in SDF and H2O2 production, but there was no significant effect of antioxidants on total sperm motility during the freeze-thaw process.
