The effects of a morphine shortage on emergency department pain control
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Mar 18, 2020
Kettler E, et al. - Researchers examined how national morphine shortage in 2018 affected analgesia and patient disposition in two academic emergency departments (EDs). The control period (with morphine) was from April 1, 2017 to June 30, 2017 and the study period (without morphine) was from April 1, 2018 to June 30, 2018. Assessment of 6,296 patients and 5,816 was done during the control period and the study period, respectively. Outcomes revealed no significant impact on analgesia or disposition when IV morphine was removed in the ED, without a compensatory rise in alternative opioids. Data thereby support a more limited opioid use approach in the ED.
