The effect of vegan diets on blood pressure in adults: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
American Journal of Medicine May 01, 2019
Lopez PD, et al. - In this investigation involving 983 adults, researchers studied the influence of vegan diets on blood pressure. According to findings, adherence to a vegan diet did not lead to a significant change in systolic (−1.33 mmHg) or diastolic (−1.21 mmHg) blood pressure levels vs less restrictive diets. In a prespecified subgroup analysis of studies with baseline systolic blood pressure ≥ 130 mmHg, vegan diet resulted in a mean reduction in the systolic (−4.10 mmHg) and diastolic (−4.01 mmHg) blood pressure levels. Overall, the investigators concluded that the changes in blood pressure levels induced without caloric restrictions by a vegan diet are similar to those induced by dietary approaches recommended by medical societies and portion-controlled diets.
