The effect of sleeve gastrectomy on the hormonal profile of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome
Obesity Surgery Apr 10, 2019
Machado AS, et al. - At the Hospital das Clínicas, Federal University of Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil, in 2018, researchers performed this prospective study, evaluating 18 obese patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), whose age varied from 18 to 40 years, with an indication for bariatric surgery, for the hormonal profile and weight loss. they observed higher postoperative estradiol (E2) levels (preoperative mean of 63.4 pg/dL vs postoperative mean of 91.0 pg/dL), that did not remain statistically significant then. At the postoperative period, they noted statistically significant reductions in mean fasting insulin levels (24.4 mIU/mL vs 9.0 mIU/mL), luteinizing hormone (LH) levels (7.2 vs 4.5), and an inverted LH/follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) ratio (1.5 vs 0.9); relevant weight loss (mean BMI, 40.5 kg/m2 vs 33.4 kg/m2). Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) led to satisfactory weight loss in addition to alteration in the endocrine profile that was more homeostatic and conducive to reproduction. This suggests SG could provide attractive physiological outcomes for women with PCOS.
