The effect of multiple-dose oral versus intravenous tranexamic acid in reducing postoperative blood loss and transfusion rate after adolescent scoliosis surgery: A randomized controlled trial

The Spine Journal Oct 23, 2020

Zhang Z, Wang LN, Yang X, et al. - A prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial was designed to ascertain if the multiple-dose regimen of tranexamic acid (TXA) could decrease postoperative blood loss (PBL) and the postoperative transfusion rate, and to compare the effectiveness of oral administration with intravenous administration and to assess if this regimen could alleviate inflammatory response, and to determine the occurrence of drug-related side effects. Researchers included a sum of 108 patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) who had undergone posterior scoliosis correction and spinal fusion. Either by oral or intravenous application, a multiple-dose regimen of TXA, could be a safe and effective means of controlling PBL and reducing the postoperative transfusion rate in patients with AIS who had undergone scoliosis surgery. Moreover, this medicine could inhibit the postoperative inflammatory response.
