The effect of blood flow rate on dialysis recovery time in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: A prospective, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial

Hemodialysis International Mar 10, 2019

Duggal V, et al. - In this multicenter, single-blinded, randomized, parallel-design controlled trial, researchers assessed dialysis recovery time (DRT) in relation to an intervention involving a blood flow rate reduction of 100 mL/min, to a minimum of 300 mL/min vs usual care in 102 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (HD) in 18 centers with baseline DRT of greater than 6 hours. The main outcome of interest was between-group difference in change in DRT (primary outcome). Additionally, they focused on changes in London Evaluation of Illness (LEVIL) survey responses from baseline (secondary outcomes). Blood flow rate reduction vs usual care did not offer a superior improvement in DRT. As far as addressing patient-reported fatigue was concerned, the requirement for doing more work was realized but substantial changes in dialysis prescription may be necessary to obtain a significant positive impact.
