The effect of anticoagulation on outcomes after liver and spleen injuries: A research consortium of New England centers for trauma (ReCONECT) study

Injury Jun 04, 2020

Bhattacharya B, Askari R, Davis KA, et al. - As liver and spleen are the most commonly injured solid organs, researchers sought to ascertain the effects of anticoagulation on these injuries. They conducted a multicenter retrospective study including 1,254 patients admitted with liver and/or splenic injury; of these, 64 (5%) were on anticoagulation (AC). Splenic injury was reported in 58% of patients, liver injury in 53% and both in 11%. Relative to non-AC patients, patients on AC were older. Warfarin was the most common AC drug used (70%) with atrial fibrillation (47%) as the most common indication for AC. Outcomes revealed no effect of using anticoagulation on outcomes among patients with spleen and/or liver injuries.
