The effect of adoption on functioning and psychosocial well-being in patients with congenital upper-extremity differences

The Journal of Hand Surgery May 27, 2021

Wall LB, Velicki K, Morris M, et al. - In this study, parent-reported outcomes in adopted and non-adopted individuals with congenital upper-extremity (UE) anomalies were compared to ascertain if there was a measurable difference in parent perceptions of psychosocial health and functioning. Researchers distinguished 91 adopted pediatric patients with congenital UE differences. Using the Pediatric Outcome Data Collection Instrument, parent-reported scores on functional and psychosocial subjective outcomes were compared between the 2 cohorts. Adoption status is seen to affect only the parent-reported domain of UE function in pediatric patients with UE differences. As per the findings, while variations by specific congenital diagnosis call for additional evaluation, overall, these data should be reassuring to families planning to adopt children with UE differences, and they should be supported in their expectations of UE functioning.
