The combination of healthy diet and healthy body weight is associated with lower risk of nuclear cataract in the Blue Mountains Eye Study
The Journal of Nutrition Jun 11, 2019
Tan AG, et al. - Researchers evaluated the incidence of age-related cataract in relation to adherence to dietary guidelines, using total diet score, in the population-based Blue Mountains Eye Study cohort (1992–1994). Among a total of 3654 baseline participants, analysis of 2334 (75.8% survivors) and 1952 (76.7% survivors) was done after 5 and 10 y, respectively. The Wisconsin Cataract Grading System was used to evaluate cataract from lens photographs. Using FFQ data following a modified version of the Healthy Eating Index for Australians, calculation of baseline total diet score was done. In this older Australian population, no appreciable impact of adherence to dietary guidelines on cataract development overall was evident. However, reduced risk of nuclear cataract, an aging marker, was observed in relation to adherence to dietary guidelines combined with healthy BMI.
