The clinical course after long-term acute care hospital admission among older Medicare beneficiaries
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Sep 05, 2019
Makam AN, Tran T, Miller ME, et al. - Researchers focused on the clinical course following long-term acute care (LTAC) hospital admission among older (65 years of age or older) Medicare beneficiaries in this nationally representative 5-year cohort study. They used 5% Medicare data from 2009 to 2013. Median survival was 8.3 months in 14,072 hospitalized older adults transferred to an LTAC hospital, with 1- and 5-year survival rates of 45% and 18%, respectively. Overall, poor survival was reported in hospitalized older adults transferred to LTAC hospitals. These people continued to be inpatient for most of their remaining lives and often underwent life-prolonging procedures. Exceedingly low rates of palliative care consultations were also reported.
