The clinical academic workforce of the future: A cross-sectional study of factors influencing career decision-making among clinical PhD students at two research-intensive UK universities

BMJ Open Sep 01, 2017

Lopes J, et al. – The clinical doctoral students’ demographic and training characteristics, career intentions, career preparedness and what affected them as they planned their prospective careers, were the topics analyzed in this paper. The predoctoral clinicians were urged to gain varied research experience while ensuring availability of opportunities. The introduction of a more flexible recruitment criteria for clinical lectureship (CL) appointments would foster clinical academic career (CAC). Several postdoctoral clinicians who completed training, or nearly done so, did not gain the opportunity the post offered to develop as independent researchers. Methods to increase the number of senior clinical academic appointments ought to be examined as their lack notably affected the career decisions.
