The changing states of fibromyalgia in patients with axial spondyloarthritis: Results from the British Society of Rheumatology Biologics Register for Ankylosing Spondylitis
Rheumatology Feb 04, 2021
Provan SA, Dean LE, Jones GT, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining factors linked with FM development and recovery in patients with axial SpA (axSpA). From 83 centres, the British Society of Rheumatology Biologics Register for Ankylosing Spondylitis (BSRBR-AS) recruited 801 participants with axSpA. FM was diagnosed using the self-reported Fibromyalgia. At baseline, a total of 686 participants did not have FM, 45 of these reported FM development at follow-up. While among 115 participants, who had FM at baseline, 77 had recovered at follow-up. In patients with axSpA, the development of FM was observed to be linked with high levels of disease activity and the presence of widespread pain, while recovery from FM was observed in correlation with low levels of the same variables and starting a TNF inhibitor. Based on findings, they emphasize considering the presence of comorbid FM in patients with persistent high axSpA disease activity and widespread pain.
