The association of serum angiogenic growth factors with renal structure and function in patients with adult autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
International Urology and Nephrology Apr 18, 2018
Coban M,et al. - Researchers presented the association of serum angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1), Ang-2, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) with total kidney volume (TKV), total cyst volume (TCV), and renal failure in adult autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) patients at various stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In ADPKD patients, no relationship of serum angiogenic growth factors with TKV or renal failure was noted. As suggested by increased serum Ang-2 observed in stages 1-2 CKD, angiogenesis played a role in the progression of early-stage ADPKD, but not at later stages of the disease. Possible cessation of angiogenesis in advanced stages of CKD because of the increased number of sclerotic glomeruli could explain this.
