The association of interdialytic blood pressure variability with cardiovascular events and all-cause mortality in haemodialysis patients

Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Mar 09, 2019

Sarafidis PA, et al. - In 227 haemodialysis patients, researchers assessed short-term blood pressure variability (BPV) as a prognosticator for mortality and cardiovascular events. During a standard interval, participants had 44-h ambulatory monitoring and were followed-up for 30.17 ± 17.70 months. Using validated formulas, SD, weighted SD (wSD), coefficient of variation (CV) and average real variability (ARV) of BP were computed. A higher risk of death and cardiovascular events was observed in association with increased BPV during the interdialytic interval, but not in relation to ambulatory BP levels. Following adjustment for pulse wave velocity (PWV), other risk factors and prevalent cardiovascular disease, the non-independent nature of this link was evident. Short-term BPV was suggested to be a mediator promoting the adverse cardiovascular profile of haemodialysis patients.
