The association of emergency department treatments for hyperglycemia with glucose reduction and emergency department length of stay

The Journal of Emergency Medicine Oct 26, 2017

Driver BE, et al. - A retrospective chart review study is performed to ascertain the magnitude of the relationship between glucose-lowering therapies and 1) actual glucose reduction and 2) emergency department (ED) length of stay (LOS). The outcome revealed that both insulin and intravenous fluids are related to a modest glucose reduction in patients with type 2 diabetes who present with moderate to severe hyperglycemia. They also noticed that the intravenous fluids were related to a significant increase in ED LOS, but insulin was not. These outcomes ought to be considered when ascertaining whether to administer therapies that decrease glucose in the ED.
