Alcohol and Alcoholism Dec 12, 2019
Savolainen I, Oksanen A, Kaakinen M, et al. - Researchers conducted a web-based survey among youths aged 15–25 in the USA (n = 1,212), South Korea (n = 1,192), Finland (n = 1,200) and Spain (n = 1,212) in order to determine the continuing role of daily popular social media use in youth hazardous alcohol consumption in these countries. The analysis revealed higher hazardous alcohol use among youths in Finland, South Korea, and Spain in correlation to the daily use of Facebook and Instagram. Among South Korean and Finnish youths, higher hazardous alcohol use was also noted in relation to daily instant messaging. Youths in South Korea exhibited higher hazardous alcohol use whereas youths in the USA and Finland had lower hazardous alcohol use in correlation to daily YouTube use. Hazardous drinking was lower among youths in Finland but was higher among youths in Spain in correlation to daily Twitter use. As per the mediation analyses, uploading pictures to social media is a possible facilitator of social media-related hazardous alcohol use among youths in the USA and Spain. These findings suggest the inspiring role of certain social media platforms in hazardously drinking youths, contributing to the expanding opportunities for social media interventions.
