Shi Y, et al. - In this population-based ecological study, researchers explored the relationships of cannabis exposures with recreational cannabis legalization (ie, removing all penalties for adults’ possession of cannabis in small amount for recreational use) and commercialization (ie, providing a legal supply of cannabis to adults through licensed dispensaries). This investigation was performed at state-quarter aggregate level. The connection between a state's enactment of recreational cannabis legalization and its changes in cannabis exposures was statistically nonsignificant overall. However, after controlling for recreational cannabis legalization, the initiation of recreational cannabis commercialization was linked to 5.06-5.80 more exposures per 1,000,000 population per quarter depending on the composition of comparison states. After recreational cannabis commercialization in the US, a spike in cannabis exposures reported to the US National Poison Data System was observed.
