The association between diabetes medication and weight change in a non-surgical weight management intervention: An intervention cohort study
Diabetic Medicine Sep 10, 2019
Aldekhail NM, Morrison DS, Khojah H, et al. - Using data from EHRs from the Glasgow and Clyde Weight Management Service (GCWMS), researchers compared weight change in a lifestyle-based weight management program among participants taking weight-gaining, weight-neutral/loss, and mixed diabetes medications. Between February 2008 and May 2014, EHRs for adults with type 2 diabetes who had been referred to a non-surgical weight management program were analyzed. The study sample consisted of 998 people who took oral diabetes medications and attended ≥ 2 sessions of weight management. Compared with participants on weight-gaining medications, those on weight-neutral/loss diabetes medications had a greater absolute weight loss within a weight management intervention. Ahead of planned weight-loss interventions, the investigators recommended reviewing diabetes medications to help ensure maximum intervention efficacy.
