The association between diabetes and age-related macular degeneration among the elderly in Taiwan

Diabetes Care Aug 03, 2018

He MS, et al. - For this investigation, longitudinal, retrospective cohort study data for the period between 1997 and 2012 were acquired from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database of Taiwan to examine the association between diabetes and future development of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By age, sex, and Charlson comorbidity index, the final available 71,904 patients with diabetes and 270,213 patients without diabetes ≥50 years of age were further matched. This investigation provided large-scale, population-based evidence that diabetes with retinopathy was independently correlated with an increased risk of subsequent AMD development.
