Ten years of external quality assessment (EQA) of Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial susceptibility testing in Europe elucidate high reliability of data
BMC Infectious Diseases Mar 29, 2019
Cole MJ, et al. - Researchers compared antimicrobial susceptibility category and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) results from the first 5 years (2007–2011) of the European Gonococcal Antimicrobial Susceptibility Programme (Euro-GASP) external quality assessment (EQA) with the latter 5 years (2012–2016) to evaluate how the 2012 European Union case definitions influenced the reporting of antimicrobial susceptibility. In each year, antimicrobial susceptibility category agreement of ≥91% was observed. They noted limited overall impact on the validity of results despite a shift to using breakpoints published by the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) in the latter 5 years, as very little change was observed in the percentage of categorical agreement and MIC concordance between the two five-year periods. These observations indicate production of high quality data by the Euro-GASP participants and provide confidence in susceptibility and resistance data produced by laboratories performing decentralised testing.
