Symptoms of depression and risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm: A HUNT study
Journal of the American Heart Association Nov 05, 2019
Nyrønning LA, et al. - Researchers undertook this population-based prospective study to investigate if an increased risk of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) exists in people with depressive symptoms. They performed this investigation on participants (n = 59,136, 52.4% women, aged 50 to 106 years) from the HUNT (Norwegian Nord-Trøndelag Health Study). By means of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), evaluation of symptoms of depression was done. Participants were observed for a median duration of 13 years, during which, 742 incident cases of AAA (201 women) were documented. Depressive symptoms (defined as HADS depression scale [HADS-D]) ≥ 8) were reported by 6,401 participants (12.3%)(52.5% women). The annual incidence rate of AAA was estimated to be 1.0 per 1000 people. Findings revealed a significantly higher risk of incident AAA in participants with depressive symptoms, this was observed after adjustments for established risk factors.
