Suspected appendicitis pathway continues to lower CT rates in children two years after implementation

Gurien LA, et al. - Following two years of the implementation of a protocol to assess pediatric patients with suspected appendicitis using ultrasound as the initial imaging modality, researchers ascertained CT utilization rates and diagnostic accuracy. Patients <18 years evaluated for suspected appendicitis wee included in this retrospective observational study. Observations revealed a sustained decrease in CT use with adherence to a pathway designed to evaluate pediatric patients with suspected appendicitis using ultrasound as the primary imaging modality without compromising diagnostic accuracy.
