Surgical techniques for tonsillectomy and perioperative respiratory complications in children

Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jun 10, 2021

Baijal RG, Wyatt KE, Shittu T, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to determine the incidence of perioperative respiratory complications in children following tonsillectomy with cold and hot dissection surgical techniques. Participants in the study were children (n = 2,437) presenting for a tonsillectomy at Texas Children’s Hospital from November 2015 to December 2017. Data reported that the incidence of perioperative respiratory complications was 20.0%. No difference was found in the incidence of perioperative respiratory complications in children undergoing tonsillectomy by cold or hot dissection. Patient factors influence perioperative respiratory complications after tonsillectomy more than surgical technique.
