Supervised injection facility use and all-cause mortality among people who inject drugs in Vancouver, Canada: A cohort study
PLoS Medicine Dec 12, 2019
Kennedy MC, et al. - By analyzing data from 2 prospective cohort studies, researchers determined the link between frequent supervised injection facility (SIF) use and all-cause mortality among people who inject drugs (PWID) in Vancouver, Canada. They acquired data on sociodemographic features, substance use patterns, social-structural exposures, and use of health services including SIFs, by administering questionnaires to participants every 6 months. This study included 811 participants, with 278 (34.3%) being women, and the median age was 39 years at baseline. Frequent SIF use at baseline was stated by 432 (53.3%) participants. The participants were observed over a median duration of 72 months. Death of 112 participants (13.8%) was reported during the study period, yielding a crude mortality rate of 22.7 deaths per 1,000 person-years. In a community-recruited cohort of PWID, findings revealed a high burden of premature mortality. Lower risk of death, independent of relevant confounders, was observed in relation to frequent SIF use. Attempts to improve access to SIFs as a strategy to decrease mortality among PWID were supported.
