Supernatant reduction of stored gamma-irradiated red blood cells minimizes potentially harmful substances present in transfusion aliquots for neonates

Serrano K, et al. – This research encompassed the analysis of the impact of supernatant reduction of stored gamma–irradiated red blood cells on the potentially harmful substances present in transfusion aliquots, for neonates. The results displayed that the reduction by centrifugation effectively reduced potassium, mannitol, and RBC microvesicles (RMV) in aliquots from gamma–irradiated RBCs, that were stored up to 21 days.
