Suicide risk among cancer survivors: Head and neck vs other cancers
Cancer Dec 02, 2018
Osazuwa-Peters N, et al. - Given an increased risk of suicide exists in cancer survivors owing to psychosocial issues, researchers mainly examined survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC) and examined the risk of suicide across cancer sites. The top 20 cancer sites, including HNC, were queried in 2000-2014 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18-registry database. For HNC sites, the mortality rate from suicide was estimated and was compared with rates for 19 other cancer sites. In this study, models stratified by sex, controlling for race, marital status, age, year, and stage at diagnosis, were used. Findings revealed that the risk of death by suicide is still a problem for cancer survivors, particularly those with HNC, despite the observed improvements in the survival rates in cancer due to improved treatments.
