Studying the variability in patient inflow and staffing trends on Sundays versus other days in the academic emergency department
Journal of Emergencies, Trauma and Shock Aug 30, 2017
Nambiar KTM, et al. – In this study, experts sought to explain and examine patient inflow variability and staffing trends on Sundays vs. other days in a tertiary academic emergency department (ED) from South India. They found deficiencies in all categories of ED staff on all days, and this was pronounced on Sundays because of significantly higher patient inflow. Inadequate ED staffing, primarily because of a significant dearth of tier–1 physicians was a pointer toward quality compromise in developing EDs. In developing EDs for optimum quality care, authors recommended adequate staff deployment. This had to be implemented such that staffing was based on expected patient inflow so that a Âpatient–per–hour (PPH)–per–provider goal of 2.5 was targeted across all shifts.
