Statins for primary prevention of cardiovascular events and mortality in old and very old adults with and without type 2 diabetes: Retrospective cohort study
BMJ Sep 11, 2018
Ramos R, et al. – This retrospective cohort study evaluated whether statin treatment was associated with a reduction in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and mortality in elderly (aged ≥75 years) adults with and without diabetes. Researchers analyzed the data of 46,864 study participants without clinically recognized ASCVD. Results showed that statins were not related to a decrease in ASCVD or all-cause mortality in primary prevention in study participants without diabetes aged >74 years independently of age subgroup. However, statins were statically significantly associated with a reduction in the incidence of ASCVD and in all-cause mortality in study participants with type 2 diabetes; there was an observed reduction in this effect after age 85 years and disappeared in nonagenarians.
