Soft-tissue sarcoma in adolescents and young adults compared with older adults: A report among 5000 patients from the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Central Register
Cancer Aug 02, 2019
Papworth KE, et al. - Researchers sought to report on the clinical presentation and outcomes in adolescents and young adults (AYA) diagnosed with soft-tissue sarcoma (STS) via analyzing data of 4,977 STS patients [868 AYA (those aged 18-39 years) and 4,109 older adults (OA; those aged 40-80 years)] obtained using the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Central Register. As per findings, OA and AYA differ in the distribution of STS subtypes (eg, OA were more likely to be diagnosed with malignant fibrous histiocytoma compared with AYA). Also, OA more frequently have tumors measuring ≥ 5 cm and a higher malignancy grade. In the majority of STS subtypes, they observed significantly better overall survival and less disease recurrence among AYA vs OA, but for those with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, this finding was not true.
