Sociodemographic factors and choice of oral anticoagulant in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation in Sweden: A population-based cross-sectional study using data from national registers
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Mar 03, 2019
Gurusamy VK, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers used linked national registers in Sweden to examine the links between sociodemographics and prescribing non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) as a substitute to warfarin. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess patients aged ≥18 years with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) who were oral anticoagulant naïve and filled a first prescription for a NOAC or warfarin between December 1, 2011 to December 31, 2014. Of 68,056 patients with NVAF, 18,638 received NOAC and 49,418 received warfarin. According to the findings, preventative treatment with a NOAC vs warfarin was more likely to be initiated in patients with high socioeconomic status and urban residence among Swedish patients with NVAF.
