Sociodemographic disparities in chemotherapy treatment and impact on survival among patients with metastatic bladder cancer
Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations Apr 11, 2018
Klapheke A, et al. - Experts analyzed how socioeconomic status and other demographic factors were related to the receipt of chemotherapy and subsequent survival in patients diagnosed with metastatic bladder cancer using data from the California Cancer Registry. Clear disparities were seen in the chemotherapy treatment and survival with respect to socioeconomic and marital status. Chemotherapy was received by less than half (46.3%) of patients. Compared to the patients from highest quintile, patients from the lowest socioeconomic quintile were half as likely to have chemotherapy. A less likeliness of unmarried patients to receive treatment was seen. Authors noted an association of not receiving chemotherapy with greater mortality from bladder cancer and from all causes.
