Smoking cessation after hospitalization for myocardial infarction or cardiac surgery: Assessing patient interest, confidence, and physician prescribing practices

Clinical Cardiology Nov 05, 2019

Riley H, Ainani N, Turk A, et al. - In this study performed on current smokers hospitalized for an acute cardiac event, researchers investigated whether a strong interest in smoking cessation (SC) after hospitalization is reported by hospitalized smokers and whether these people receive little assistance from their physicians. The participants were asked to prioritize their health behavior priorities and were interrogated regarding their view toward SC therapies. Evaluation of SC cessation prescriptions offered by their physicians was also done. The survey was completed by 81 (77%) of 105 patients approached. Desire to stop smoking, wish to be provided with help in doing so, and overwhelmingly reporting cessation as their highest health behavior priority, was found in the majority of hospitalized smokers with cardiac disease, although smoking was viewed by some as something unrelated to their disease. The receptivity to SC interventions seemed to be great during the time frame after an acute cardiac event; however, disappointingly low rates of providing tailored, evidence-based interventions were reported.
