Smokers with type 1 diabetes are more insulin-resistant: Results from Poznan Prospective Study (PoProStu)

Clinical Diabetology Apr 10, 2018

Uruska A, et al. - Researchers assessed the association between smoking and insulin resistance in type 1 diabetics. Patients were from the Poznan Prospective Study (PoProStu), aged 34 ± 6 years, and with a diabetes duration 10 ± 1.5 years. Insulin resistance was evaluated via estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR), anthropometric data and liver function. Higher weight, larger waist circumference, higher waist-to-hip ratio, higher level of gamma-glutamyl transferase and lower eGDR was seen in smokers vs non-smokers, affirming the health benefits of not smoking among people with type 1 diabetes. Findings indicated that insulin resistance was related to smoking in patients with type 1 diabetes who were treated from the initial diagnosis with intensive insulin therapy.
