Sleep apnea, coronary artery calcium density and cardiovascular events: Results from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)

Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine May 28, 2021

Newman SB, Kundel V, Matsuzaki M, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), defined as apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] ≥ 15 events/hour, coronary artery calcium (CAC) density, and cardiovascular events in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). They analyzed 1,041 candidates with non-zero CAC scores who had polysomnography and CAC density data from the fifth examination of MESA. The analytical sample was 45% female with a mean age of 70.6 +/- 9 years. OSA was linked to lower CAC density, but this connection was attenuated by BMI. In addition, in exploratory analysis, increased CAC density was linked to a lower risk of CVD events only in people within the non-OSA group.
