Six-year survival of patients with unsuspected uterine malignancy after laparoscopic vs laparotomic myomectomy: An 11-year national retrospective cohort study
Gynecologic Oncology Aug 30, 2018
Yuk JS, et al. - Researchers used the national health insurance database, between 2006 and 2010, to compare the overall survival of women with unsuspected uterine malignancy (UUM), including sarcomas and adenosarcomas, diagnosed after laparotomic vs laparoscopic myomectomy. They also assessed the incidence of UUM diagnosed after myomectomy. Two groups of patients were formed: a laparotomic myomectomy group (n = 56,213) and a laparoscopic myomectomy group (n = 22,613). Post-laparotomic or laparoscopic myomectomy, the estimated incidence of UUM after myomectomy was 0.08%. The overall survival rate was not attenuated with morcellator use but clinicians have been recommended to explain the risks of intraperitoneal tumor dissemination to patients and do their best to prevent tumor spillage when using this tool.
