Short-term outcomes of robotic gastrectomy vs laparoscopic gastrectomy for gastric cancer

JAMA Oct 19, 2021

Ojima T, Nakamura M, Hayata K, et al. - The short-term surgical outcomes of robotic gastrectomy (RG) vs laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) for resectable gastric cancer were compared.

  • A randomized clinical trial including 241 patients with resectable gastric cancer (clinical stages I-III).

  • No significant difference was evident in the incidence of intra-abdominal infectious complications (the primary end point).

  • The LG group had significantly higher overall incidence of postoperative complications of grade II or higher when compared with the RG group.

  • Overall findings suggest that intra-abdominal infectious complications do not reduce with RG vs LG for gastric cancer.
